A compass is a guide. It gives you a general sense of which direction to head, but it doesn't walk the path for you. Everyone travels their own route, and the best path for one family isn't necessarily the best path for another. At Behaviour Companion, I see my role as meeting you where you are, helping you figure out where you want to be, and guiding you on how to get there. But the journey is yours. I'm here as support, not as the one drawing the map. Sometimes we find the answer right away. Other times we need to do more exploring. Either way, we're in it together.

The four points

Connection is the foundation of everything I do. Without it, there's no real buy-in, and progress stays limited. When the connection is strong, with me, with caregivers, with the wider community around your child, the other three points have a solid scaffold to work within.

Skills come next. A lot of what looks like defiance is really a skill that hasn't caught up yet, not a refusal to comply. When we look honestly at what skills someone actually has access to in a given moment, we can teach toward the gap instead of punishing it.

Environment often shapes our behaviour more than we realize. When we understand the role the environment plays, we can shape it to better support the person in it.

Capacity is different for each of us, and it shifts depending on the moment and everything else going on around it. When we understand someone's capacity, child or parent, we can build support that isn't just effective on paper, it actually feels possible to achieve. I won't ask you to do more than you can, or more than your resources allow.
